Discover the Amalfi Coast at Anantara’s newly opened hotel

A look inside the Anantara Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi, a 13th century monastery converted into a luxurious five star hotel

“When life gives you lemons, make sure they’re from the Amalfi Coast.” This saying has stuck with me since a dinner in London a few years ago. Little did I know that the true essence of these wrinkled fruits would reveal itself to me during a recent visit to the newly opened Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel.

Perched atop a cliff in the coastal town of Amalfi, amidst olive and lemon groves, this 13th–century monastery has been transformed into a sanctuary of luxury under the revered Anantara brand, marking their second venture in Italy. In an exclusive interview with General Manager Giacomo Sarnataro, he reveals the secrets that lie beyond the historic walls, offering us a closer look at what this new Amalfi Coast sanctuary has in store.

Why Visit?

Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel is arguably one of the most extraordinary, timeless and unique properties on the Amalfi coast. “It is like managing a museum,” Sarnataro says with a smile. “With 800 years of history, it possesses a magical and unique energy—it’s much more than a hotel, it’s a place of the heart,” Sarnataro adds.

Originally built as a home for monks and later occupied by Capuchin friars, it is evident that monks and friars had a pretty good eye for prime real estate. With panoramic views sweeping the Tyrrhenian Sea and just a stone–throw away from the bustling streets and crowds of Amalfi, one would assume that a property developer from the 13th century designed this convent with the 21st century’s luxury hotel market in mind.

Not only does it provide spectacular views, but the rest of the building is equally impressive. From its remarkable Arab–influenced architecture to a cloister nestled within its grounds and a scenic pathway dubbed “the monks walk,” are just a few of the highlights to discover.

The hotel boasts the best of both worlds. Following a ten–month renovation, the new Anantara chapter kept the original features of the hotel, while interiors feature a seamless fusion of modern comforts and natural materials to create a luxurious space and reflects the Amalfi region. It is as if you are staying inside a UNESCO heritage site but with the luxury of cutting–edge technology and exquisite interior design.

What Makes The Hotel So Unique?

“Travellers who visit the Amalfi Coast seek a ‘journey within the journey,'” explains Sarnataro. “Today, true luxury means living authentically through tailor–made experiences.

It’s about those special touches, exceptional service, and an immersive journey that remains true to the culture and community.” And that’s exactly what awaits you at the Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel. Committed to showcasing the rich heritage and craftsmanship of local artisans, the hotel proudly presents hand–painted ceramic pieces adorned with traditional patterns sourced directly from the region’s skilled artisans.

Amidst this grand display of artistry, it is the humble Amalfi lemons that truly steal the limelight. Their invigorating aroma permeates the entire property, revitalising the air and giving it a refreshing makeover. These citrus wonders, known as “sfusato amalfitano,” are far from ordinary fruits.

“They symbolise the essence of the Amalfi Coast,” explains Sarnataro. “For us, they represent the traditions of the past, the wisdom of our gardeners, and the symbol of an entire community.”

From the moment you set foot inside, these lemons are treated like VIPs. With five terraces adorning the property, they become an integral part of your experience. Sip on lemon–infused water that tantalises your taste buds, indulge in mouth–watering cuisine at the restaurant where they take centre stage, and even the rooms and spa embrace their charm with lemon–scented room diffusers and wellness treatments that leave you feeling refreshingly rejuvenated, as if infused with the zestful energy of the lemons themselves.

Honourable mention: For those longing to indulge in the captivating fragrance, taste, and aromas of Amalfi lemons, an extraordinary cooking class awaits at the Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel. Here, guests are invited to embark on a culinary journey and recreate the renowned “Cannelloni del Convento,” a pasta dish deeply rooted in history and infused with the vibrant essence of the region.

Using fresh lemons and hand picked ingredients from the hotel’s gardens, the culinary masterpiece showcases the harmonious blend of creamy buffalo ricotta cheese and the zestful tang of lemon. It’s a dish that has delighted discerning palates across the area since its inception at the convent back in 1924, making it a truly flavourful homage to tradition.

The Rooms

Nestled within the labyrinthine structure of the hotel, you’ll find 52 rooms and suites, each with its own captivating narrative to share. “Our vision was to create a luxurious ambiance that seamlessly blends the tranquil aura of a monastery with the impeccable standards of Anantara,” remarks Sarnataro.

Originally designated as monk quarters, these spaces have been meticulously refurbished, exuding a contemporary allure and sophisticated charm. Yet, remnants of their storied past persist, with original tiles, vaulted ceilings, and lime– washed walls, as if these rooms are eager to recount their history.

However, it’s the opulent suites that elevate the experience to new heights, quite literally. With their privileged positions, guests have the choice of gazing upon the serene cloister or indulging in a front–row seat overlooking the breath–taking Amalfi coast. And that’s not all — these suites offer private terraces and plunge pools, epitomising the essence of la dolce vita.

The Dining Experience

While you may be familiar with the “farm to table” concept, get ready to experience a delightful twist: the “convent to table” idea embraced by Convento di Amalfi.

Under the expert guidance of executive chef Claudio Lanuto, a true maestro of regional cuisine, the culinary offerings are enhanced with high–quality products grown right on the convent’s grounds.

During your stay, you’ll have the opportunity to witness Chef Lanuto personally tending to his garden amidst the hotel’s lush surroundings. Here, he carefully handpicks the freshest vegetables and aromatic herbs, an age–old tradition deeply rooted in these sacred grounds.

All of these carefully cultivated ingredients can be savoured in the hotel’s restaurant, “Dei Cappuccini,” through a “hyper–local” tasting menu.

The menu highlights a range of exquisite dishes, such as the delicate raw local amberjack complemented by a smoked broth and tangy green apple, as well as the succulent slow–cooked beef–cheek sourced from the region, accompanied by grilled marrow and earthy mushrooms.

For a lighter culinary experience, the lunch restaurant, La Locanda della Canonica, offers a refreshing menu, allowing you to bask in the daytime sun and enjoy the picturesque poolside views as your backdrop.

Honourable mention: Anantara has partnered with the renowned Neapolitan pizza maestro, Gino Sorbillo, to create an exclusive selection of pizzas available every evening at La Locanda della Canonica.

“The Gino Sorbillo brand belongs to one of the oldest families of pizza makers in Naples, making him the perfect partner for this project,” explains Sarnataro. These pizzas are a true highlight, showcasing the finest ingredients from the region. From anchovies sourced from the small fishing village of Cetara to mozzarella made in Agerola, and herbs freshly picked from the garden, each bite takes you on a flavourful journey through the charming villages surrounding Naples.

What not to miss

Zesty spa treatments: Although the spa and wellness centre have not yet opened, you can indulge in the signature al–fresco massage on the terrace cabana, which is an excellent alternative. The rejuvenating experience combines the soothing touch of skilled therapists with the invigorating essence of citrus oils. It’s a truly revitalising treatment that will leave you feeling refreshed, energised, and renewed.

The infinity pool: If there’s one thing that the Amalfi coast is known for lacking, it’s space. However, at this convent’s infinity pool, space is not an issue. Perched on the edge of the mountain, the pool offers a breath–taking experience with unobstructed panoramic views of the entire coast.

Local ceramics: Renowned for its ceramics, a visit to Piccadilly, Amalfi’s largest ceramics shop, is definitely worthwhile. The expansive shop stretches over three floors, offering a wide range of options. From exquisite handmade artworks and elegant crockery to customizable tableware, Piccadilly has it all. Explore the store and immerse yourself in the craftsmanship and beauty of one of Amalfi’s oldest traditions.

The visiting monk: Embrace the opportunity to connect with the rich history of the monastery during your stay at the Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel.

Twice a month, a visiting monk graces the cloister, offering a unique chance to delve into the captivating story of this sacred place. Engage in conversations and inquiries, as you uncover the secrets and tales that have shaped the monastery over the centuries.

While the allure of this sanctuary may make it difficult to depart, there is much to explore beyond its walls, from the charming town of Amalfi to sailing off to iconic destinations like Positano or Capri. Whether you crave tranquillity or adventure, both options come highly recommended. No vows are required to embark on these incredible adventures; simply let your desires guide you as you embrace the best of both worlds.
